Calligraphy, the writing of both historic and contemporary alphabets with edged and pointed pens as well as brushes has fascinated me for years. A photograph of the Egyptian scribe Heti, a limestone carving, over 4,300 years old looks down on me as I write at my table. He sits cross-legged with a thick piece of papyrus across his knees, his right hand poised to hold a reed pen. I often feel a huge tie back into antiquity as I write...finding just the right style of alphabet to fit the poem, quote, award or invitation. As I blend inks or paints and illustrations with the letters, I am reminded that according to early Muslim writing, the pen was the first object created by God.
